How Hopscotch Fosters School Readiness in Children

Early Years settings play a pivotal role in preparing children for their academic journey. These early learning environments serve as foundational spaces where young minds develop essential skills and behaviours crucial for success in school and beyond. By focusing on holistic development and tailored educational approaches, Early Years settings can significantly contribute to fostering school readiness in children.

At Hopscotch we have been working with parents and schools for 20 years to support every Hopscotch child to be prepared and ready to start ‘Big School’. This can start in the baby room with core development milestones, or for a child joining us in our preschool room for the first time. We treat every child as unique and our staff get to know a child’s strengths and what they may need additional support with to enable the child to meet their fullest potential. Below are the core areas we focus on to ensure a child is confident to start their 'Big School' journey and be school ready.

1. Socialisation Skills

We provide children with ample opportunities to interact with peers and adults in a structured setting. Through group activities, play sessions, and shared experiences, children learn vital socialisation skills such as sharing, taking turns, empathy, and conflict resolution. These skills form the basis of positive relationships and collaborative learning environments in school.

2. Language and Communication

Effective communication is key to academic success. We encourage language development through storytelling, songs, rhymes, and engaging conversations. By exposing children to a rich linguistic environment, this enhances vocabulary, comprehension, and expressive abilities, laying a solid foundation for literacy and language skills crucial for school readiness.

3. Cognitive Development

Our staff provide a rich learning environment in each of our settings to stimulate cognitive development with age-appropriate activities and educational materials. Through hands-on experiences and guided exploration, children develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. We encourage curiosity, experimentation, and discovery, fostering a love for learning that propels children towards academic achievement.

4. Emotional Regulation

Emotional intelligence is vital for navigating the challenges of school life. We support the development of emotional regulation skills by creating nurturing and supportive environments where children feel safe to express themselves. Through positive reinforcement, modelling appropriate behaviours, and teaching coping strategies, we can help children manage emotions, build resilience, and adapt to new situations effectively.

5. Independence and Self-care

We empower children to become independent learners and responsible individuals. By encouraging self-help skills such as dressing, feeding, toileting and tidying up, nurseries foster autonomy and self-confidence. These skills equip children with the confidence to navigate the demands of school life independently, promoting a sense of agency and ownership over their learning journey.

6. Pre-academic Skills

The combination of our Hopscotch Curriculum and the Early Years Statutory Framework enables children to be introduced to foundational academic concepts in a playful and engaging manner. Through activities focused on literacy, numeracy, science, and the arts, children can develop early academic skills and a curiosity for learning. We tailor activities to suit individual learning styles and abilities, ensuring that each child receives the support they need to thrive academically.

A good early years setting serves as an important experience for children to develop the skills, attitudes, and behaviours necessary for a successful transition to school. By focusing on social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development, we can lay the groundwork for lifelong learning and achievement. Through nurturing environments, skilled early years practitioners, and tailored educational experiences, we pride ourselves on helping to shape confident, resilient, and school-ready children #hopscotchready
